Science Notes

StandardsS5L3. Students will diagram and label parts of various cells (plant, animal, single-celled, multi-celled).  a. Use magnifiers such as microscopes or hand lenses to observe cells and their structure. b. Identify parts of a plant cell (membrane, wall, cytoplasm, nucleus, chloroplasts) and of an animal cell (membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus) and determine the function of the parts.c. Explain how cells in multi-celled organisms are similar and different in structure and function to single celled organisms.Essential Vocabularychloroplast       cytoplasm       hormone          membrane      wall      nucleus            organelle         osmosis           tissue               diffusion          organs
NOTES- ANIMAL and PLANT CELLS
You have heard the saying that “girls are made of sugar and spice and everything nice but boys are made up of frogs and snails and puppy dog tales”. Is that really true?  What are we made of? What are plants made up of? Are we made of the same matter? All animals are made up of cells! Cells are fascinating living things (organisms). Without them we would not survive. What does the inside of a cell look like? What are all those weird look things inside and what function (or job) do they do? Cells are like tiny factors and every part has a job to do.Each cell (both plant and animal cells) has a NUCLEUS.  The nucleus is the center of the cell. Nucleus (noun)- cell structure that directs cell activities and carries genetic information So what are cells made of?Cytoplasm (sy tuh PLAZ uhm)- is a gel like material that surrounds the internal parts of the cell Organelles (noun)- structure that has a specific job within the cell ****plant cells have a special organelle called chloroplast which helps with photosynthesis Chloroplast (noun)- organelle that makes food from sunlight, water and carbon dioxide Cell Membrane(noun)-  Cell Wall(noun) Discussion QuestionWhy can’t animal cells use sunlight to make food?
